Geronimo (1829–1909) was a prominent leader and medicine man of the Apache people, specifically the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache. Born in what is now Arizona, Geronimo became a symbol of Native American resistance to U.S. and Mexican military campaigns during the late 19th century. After his family was killed by Mexican soldiers in 1858, Geronimo began a lifelong struggle against both Mexican and American forces, leading numerous raids and evading capture in the harsh terrain of the Southwest. His resistance continued even as the U.S. government forced many Apache onto reservations. In 1886, after years of pursuit, Geronimo finally surrendered to U.S. forces—the last major Native American leader to do so. He spent the remainder of his life as a prisoner of war, despite appeals for his release. He died in 1909 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Though controversial in his time, Geronimo is now remembered as a symbol of courage, resistance, and the enduring spirit of Indigenous peoples.
