This is a Dead Pawn Bracelet. This bracelet is created by Zuni artist Nelson Lee, although we are not able to confirm this information. We do know that this piece was first pawned at Gilbert Ortega’s Pawn in the 1970’s. It was later purchased by a collector from an estate and we were able to purchase from the collector. The bracelet features Kingman Mine Turquoise, Jet and Mother of Pearl. The cuff measures 5 3/4 inches from tip to tip with an additional 1 7/16 inch opening and is 1 1/2 inches tall. This piece cannot be adjusted without damaging the integrity of the settings.

The reverse of this piece is not signed or stamped. This piece has been tested and is Sterling Silver.

Total weight is 99.0 grams.

This item has a natural patina as shown in the pictures. Most people prefer the aged look of Dead Pawn pieces. Because of this we will leave the natural patina as shown in the pictures.

The term Pawn refers to selling jewelry or other personal items for cash. It can also mean exchanging jewelry or other personal items for cash by using the item as collateral for a loan. If the piece used for collateral is not claimed by an agreed upon date, then the item becomes Dead Pawn and the pawn shop becomes the owner of the item and can choose to sell the item to reclaim the cost of the money lent. The term Dead Pawn does not indicate the age of the jewelry. Dead Pawn jewelry can be very old, newly made or anywhere in between.
