This is a high quality hand woven Navajo tapestry by artist Marlinda Etsitty. It is hand crafted from high quality wool yarn in the classic Yeibeichai, or Yei, style. This fantastic rug measures approximately 52 inches x 30 inches (about 4 feet by 2.5 feet).
Originating in Shiprock, NM, the Yeibeichai pattern is representative of Navajo ceremonies. The people within the Yeibeichai pattern are the Holy People who communicate to the Navajo people and spread the word of the Navajo gods. Yeibeichai are believed to have healing powers and are often called upon during Navajo ceremonies to restore health and general spiritual well-being.
Navajo tapestry and rugs are renowned for their quality and durability. They make wonderful wall hangings, decorative throws, and of course sturdy rugs. To care for a Navajo rug that is being used as a floor covering, simply vacuum regularly. Never wash a hand woven rug in a washing machine. Also, never have them dry-cleaned. Either of these methods can cause the rug to shrink, the colors to run, and may ruin the rug. Instead, use a soft bristle brush, simple warm water and a small amount of dish soap to clean stains.
