This is a high quality hand woven Navajo tapestry by artist Martha M Etsitty. It is hand crafted from high quality wool yarn in the classic Storm Pattern or Lightening style. This fantastic rug measures approximately 52 inches x 30 inches (a little larger than 4 feet by 2.5 feet).
The Storm Pattern rug is common among many parts of the Navajo Nation. Its origins have many different stories, each being personal to the artist themselves. This particular style was also used by an early English tradesman who helped the Navajo turn their rugs into valuable commodities. It is commonly thought that the center of the Storm Pattern represents a lake, a Hogan or the Navajo universe. Flowing water surrounds the center Hogan and shows the flow of life from the artist’s home to the four corners. The four corner elements symbolize the four sacred mountains that surround the Navajo Nation. The corners can also represent the four winds or the cardinal directions. The other motifs represent lighting and clouds, rain and life. The feathers can represent the artist’s family or the gift of the gods. No matter the interpretation of the rug, the Storm Pattern is one of the most complicated and respected patterns found within Navajo weaving.
